Divorce papers arrived at 2:14 p.m., and by 3:00 she had destroyed everything i built. i thought i was the villain until i discovered the baby was never mine.

only the sound of crackling fire filled the cabin.

Then, finally, I asked the question.

“Why?”

Callie smiled sadly.

“Because I loved you.”

The answer caught me completely off guard.

“What?”

“I loved you enough to keep hoping you’d stop.”

Tears shimmered in her eyes.

“Every business trip.”

“Callie—”

“Every lie.”

“Listen—”

“Every perfume scent that wasn’t mine.”
