That morning, as I stood in the kitchen pretending not to notice the whispered planning happening behind me, my daughter tugged on my sleeve.
It was such a small question — but it stopped me.
I almost gave the automatic answer. “Nothing, sweetheart. I already have everything I need.” That’s what dads say, right?
The Truth I Hadn’t Said Out Loud
The truth was, what I wanted wasn’t something you could wrap in a box.
I didn’t want another tie or grilling gadget. I didn’t need a new mug with “World’s Best Dad” printed on it — though I cherish every one I’ve received.
So instead of brushing off her question, I told her.
She smiled like I’d just revealed a secret treasure.
